Separate FLA From Overload Current
Record the exact motor nameplate fields and keep full-load amps distinct from the overload-current field used by the controller. Do not substitute one for the other because the labels look similar.
Match voltage, phase and current
An industrial fan motor overload check is a comparison of three evidence sets: the motor nameplate, the VFD or controller record and the project protection scheme. It is not a universal percentage copied from another drive.
Direct Answer
Compare the motor nameplate FLA and overload information with the VFD or controller settings, then check the project protection and the measured operating state. Accept a setting only when those records describe the same motor, fan duty and control path.
A PowerFlex 520-series example makes the distinction concrete: Rockwell Automation identifies P033 [Motor OL Current] as the motor nameplate overload current and P034 [Motor NP FLA] as the motor nameplate full-load amps. The same manual describes F007 Motor Overload as an internal electronic overload trip and points back to P033. Those parameter names are a series-specific example, not a universal VFD setting or a safety approval.
Keep the controller parameter export, motor nameplate, fan duty, wiring or single-line sketch and protection review together. If the motor, cable route, minimum speed, bypass or load changes, reopen the check instead of carrying an old setting forward.

Decision Framework
A VFD match is a system decision: motor data, control range, cooling, protections and the fan load must agree.
Record the exact motor nameplate fields and keep full-load amps distinct from the overload-current field used by the controller. Do not substitute one for the other because the labels look similar.
Capture the VFD model, firmware or parameter list, output current, overload function, minimum speed, acceleration and fault history. A same-kW drive can still be wrong for the motor or fan duty.
Show disconnect, short-circuit protection, grounding, bypass, interlocks and the responsible project review. The drive setting is only one part of the protection path.
Compare commanded speed, measured current, airflow or pressure condition, motor temperature and the fault code. A trip can be load, wiring, cooling, acceleration or signal related.
Field Inputs
Record the motor evidence, controller evidence and project protection evidence on one review sheet. The PowerFlex entries below are an example of how a manufacturer manual labels fields; use the exact manual for the installed drive.
| Evidence set | Record | Decision boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Motor nameplate | Voltage, phase, frequency, FLA, overload information, rpm, insulation and cooling | Do not treat FLA and overload current as interchangeable fields. |
| VFD or controller | Model, output current, overload function, parameter export, minimum speed, acceleration and fault history | The exact manual controls the parameter names and permitted range. |
| PowerFlex 520 example | P033 = Motor OL Current; P034 = Motor NP FLA (Rockwell manual, September 2025) | Use this only as a series-specific reference, not a universal setting. |
| Protection scheme | Disconnect, short-circuit protection, grounding, bypass, interlocks and project review | A drive parameter alone does not establish the installation protection. |
| Fan operating state | Commanded speed, measured current, pressure or airflow condition, temperature and time | Investigate the operating state before retuning after an overload trip. |
Boundary: This guide does not certify a product, installation, performance, price, code or customer result. Replace screening assumptions with the installed drive manual, current motor data and site evidence.
Practical Sequence
Connected Decisions
These links continue the same project workflow rather than sending the reader to loosely related content.
Log current, voltage, speed and alarms so VFD compatibility is checked against real motor behavior.
Confirm protection settings and rotation during commissioning before the fan is handed to operations.
Read the selected motor speed at the system operating point; speed and VFD settings only make sense with the installed pressure.
Boiler rooms require separate review of combustion air, heat removal, flue or process exhaust, make-up air and controls.
Questions Buyers Actually Ask
Start with the motor nameplate, the VFD or controller record and the project protection scheme. Keep voltage, phase, frequency, FLA, overload information, output current, minimum speed, cooling, wiring and the fan duty on the same review sheet.
In Rockwell Automation's PowerFlex 520-series manual, P033 [Motor OL Current] is the motor nameplate overload current and P034 [Motor NP FLA] is the motor nameplate full-load amps. These labels are specific to that series and are not universal VFD settings.
The manual describes F007 as an internal electronic overload trip and says the output current exceeded the current set by P033. Treat that as a starting point for checking the actual load, current, cooling, wiring and settings—not as proof of one cause.
No. Use the exact installed motor nameplate, controller manual, protection scheme and fan duty. A value that is valid for one drive series or motor can be wrong for another.
No. kW is only one screening input. Output current, overload capability, motor insulation, cable length, carrier settings, low-speed cooling and the fan torque or load profile can change the decision.
Send clear motor and VFD nameplate photos, the parameter export, single-line or wiring sketch, cable length and route, bypass arrangement, grounding method, fan duty or curve, operating speed range and any fault history.
Record the selected motor and drive, exact overload and protection settings, cable and grounding assumptions, minimum speed, interlocks, operating-state readings, test results, exclusions and the documents used for review.
