Air-Opening Guide

Industrial Exhaust Louvers And Shutters: Size The Opening, Not The Frame

A wall opening has to pass design airflow in rain, wind and dirt without recirculating exhaust or overloading the fan. Nominal width and height are only the start.

Direct Answer

How Do Louvers And Backdraft Shutters Affect Exhaust Fans?

A louver or shutter adds resistance and reduces effective flow area. Select it at the project airflow using manufacturer performance data for the exact assembly, then include its pressure drop, water behavior and opening characteristics in the fan-system calculation.

The rough opening is not the aerodynamic opening. Frames, blades, linkages, guards and insect or bird screens reduce free area. As face velocity rises, pressure drop and water entrainment risk can rise sharply. A device that matches the fan's nominal diameter can still be too restrictive.

Use the terms carefully. A weather louver is designed to admit or discharge air while limiting water entry under rated test conditions. A gravity backdraft shutter opens from airflow and closes when the fan stops. A motorized damper provides commanded isolation. One product may combine functions, but a light shutter is not automatically a weather-rated louver or a smoke-control damper.

Location completes the decision. Keep outdoor air intakes away from contaminated exhaust, vehicle areas and other sources as required by the adopted design rules. Detail flashing, sill drainage, sleeve seals, guards and service access. If blades cannot be cleaned or linkages cannot be reached, the opening will not retain its selected performance.

Decision Framework

Four Performance Questions For Every Wall Opening

Frame dimensions alone cannot answer airflow, rain or isolation requirements.

01

How Much Free Area?

Use the rated free area of the full assembly, not width multiplied by height. Screens and guards may have their own loss and can collect dust, lint, insects or ice.

02

What Is The Pressure Loss?

Read pressure drop at the actual design airflow and air density. Add the selected louver, shutter or damper loss to the system curve rather than assuming it is free.

03

What Weather Duty?

Specify rain-resistance, wind, corrosion, temperature and drainage requirements appropriate to the facade. A laboratory rating has defined test conditions, not a promise of zero water everywhere.

04

How Does It Close?

Check minimum opening pressure, blade orientation, counterbalance or actuator, fail position and leakage. Weak airflow may leave a gravity shutter partly open and unstable.

Field Inputs

Louver And Shutter Selection Schedule

Put airflow and envelope requirements on the same schedule so architecture and mechanical design do not select separate openings.

InputRequired DetailWhy It Changes Selection
AirflowNormal, minimum and maximum volume through each openingSets face velocity, pressure drop and whether a gravity blade can open reliably.
AssemblyLouver, shutter, damper, screen, guard and wall sleeveEvery layer changes free area, resistance, service access and closing behavior.
Weather exposureRain, prevailing wind, snow, salt, sun and facade pressureDetermines blade type, test class, material, finish, drainage and placement.
Air qualityClean intake or exhaust contaminant, temperature and corrosivenessChanges material, cleanability, discharge location and whether recirculation is acceptable.
Building detailWall build-up, flashing, sill pan, sealant, structure and exterior accessPrevents water bypass, weak mounting and inaccessible fasteners around a good component.
Control and fireBackdraft, motorized isolation, interlock and listed life-safety functionStops unlike devices from being substituted because both appear as blades in a frame.

Boundary: Use certified data for the exact louver or damper size and configuration. Water, leakage, wind and life-safety requirements must be confirmed against the adopted project standards and authority requirements.

Practical Sequence

Select A Wall Air Opening In Six Steps

  1. Name the function.State whether the opening admits replacement air, discharges exhaust, prevents reverse flow, provides isolation or performs a listed fire or smoke function.
  2. Set the airflow cases.Record normal and maximum volume, expected density and any low-flow state that must still open or close the blades correctly.
  3. Shortlist rated assemblies.Compare free area, pressure drop, water performance, leakage, material and orientation for exact sizes rather than nominal series claims.
  4. Check separation.Plot exhaust discharge, outdoor-air intakes, doors, windows, roofs and property constraints so contaminated air does not short-circuit back indoors.
  5. Detail the wall.Coordinate sleeve, structure, flashing, drainage, perimeter seal, guards, actuators, wiring and the access needed to remove screens or blades.
  6. Commission and maintain.Verify blade travel and fan airflow, inspect for vibration or water entry, and set cleaning intervals from actual fouling rather than appearance alone.

Questions Buyers Actually Ask

Industrial Louver And Shutter Questions

What is louver free area?

It is the minimum area through which air can pass, calculated according to the manufacturer's or rating method's geometry. It is smaller than the rough or frame opening and should come from data for the exact size.

Can a shutter be the same size as the fan?

Nominal matching dimensions do not prove adequate flow. Compare rated pressure drop and opening behavior at the actual airflow, then include guards, screens and transitions in the system.

What is the difference between a louver and a damper?

A louver commonly manages an exterior air opening and weather exposure. A damper regulates or isolates airflow. Products and combinations vary, so specify the required tested functions rather than relying on the label.

Why will a gravity shutter not open fully?

Possible causes include insufficient pressure, wrong orientation, dirty pivots, bent blades, wind, a restrictive guard or an uneven fan discharge. Verify the assembly and airflow rather than adding weights at random.

Should an insect screen be installed on an industrial intake?

Use one when the site and application require it, but select its mesh, material, access and pressure loss deliberately. Fine mesh can load quickly and materially reduce replacement airflow.

How far apart should exhaust and intake louvers be?

There is no one distance for every contaminant and facade. Apply adopted mechanical-code and design requirements, discharge direction, wind, elevation difference, airflow and contaminant risk to the actual site.
