A damper must open under the fan's available pressure, close when flow stops and remain serviceable in the actual weather and contaminant environment.
Check blade weight, opening pressure, frame, seals, orientation, discharge velocity, wind exposure, corrosion and access. A damper that is too stiff can starve the fan; one that leaks can allow reverse flow, noise or weather entry.
Do not add a damper after the fan selection without checking the revised pressure curve. The fan, damper, louver, duct and termination should be reviewed at the same duty. Use a gravity, spring or motorized arrangement only when its operating and maintenance behavior matches the application. Fire and smoke dampers are separate life-safety products with their own listing and control rules.
