Warehouse HVLS Planning Guide

How To Plan An HVLS Fan Layout For A Warehouse

A preliminary layout starts with zones and constraints—not by dividing floor area by a brochure coverage number.

Direct Answer

Why Floor Area Alone Cannot Set Fan Quantity

Two warehouses with the same floor area can need different fan layouts because the usable air volume and obstruction pattern are different.

High racks divide the floor into aisles. Dock doors change air movement at the perimeter. Lights, sprinklers, ducts and trusses limit candidate fan centers. Packing and picking zones may deserve priority even when storage occupies more floor area.

Use published coverage only as a model-screening reference. The preliminary layout should first map where broad circulation is needed and where a fan can actually be mounted.

Worked Planning Example

An 80 × 40 × 10 m Warehouse With Four Different Zones

This is an illustrative decision path, not a customer project or a final engineering recommendation.

Example Input

Do Not Treat 3,200 m² As One Empty Rectangle

Building
80 m × 40 m × 10 m clear height
Storage
Four rack rows with cross-aisles
Occupied Zone
Packing area near the dock side
Variable Zone
Staging area that changes by shift
Perimeter
Four frequently used dock doors
01

Mark Candidate Centers

Place test points over broad occupied areas without assuming that a catalog coverage circle is unobstructed.

02

Check The Ceiling Plan

Move or reject a test point when the mounting structure, lights, sprinklers, ducts or required clearances conflict.

03

Review Rack And Door Effects

Confirm whether rack blocks, tall goods and open dock doors create zones that need different placement or support airflow.

04

Then Screen The Model Range

Only after the usable centers are known should diameter, electrical configuration, mounting and controls be compared.

What The Four Circles Mean

They are candidate review zones in the illustration—not a promise that four fans are correct. The confirmed quantity may change when the real roof plan, obstructions, target air movement and selected model are reviewed.

Quantity Drivers

What Can Increase, Reduce Or Relocate Candidate Fan Positions?

Change one input and the layout may change with it. Record the evidence instead of hiding the assumptions.

InputWhat It ChangesEvidence To Send
Clear Height And Roof ProfileUsable diameter range, extension requirement and vertical clearances.Section drawing and roof photographs
Trusses And Mounting PointsWhether a candidate center is structurally available.Roof or truss plan with dimensions
Racks And Stored GoodsHow air can move across aisles and occupied picking areas.Rack plan, rack height and product height

Dock Doors And OpeningsPerimeter air behavior and the need for local support airflow.Door locations, size and operating pattern

Warehouse Buyer Questions

Warehouse HVLS Layout FAQ

Short answers for early planning; final positions and configuration require project-specific confirmation.

How many HVLS fans does a warehouse need?

A defensible quantity cannot be calculated from floor area alone. The review also needs clear height, roof structure, racks, doors, occupied zones, obstruction clearances and the selected fan platform.

Where should candidate fan centers be placed?

Start above zones needing broad circulation, then test each center against the roof structure, lights, sprinklers, ducts, racks, doors and the selected model's instructions.

Can I divide floor area by catalog coverage?

No. Published coverage can help screen a model, but simple division ignores obstruction, overlap, mounting, clear height and where people actually work.

Do HVLS fans replace warehouse ventilation?

No. HVLS fans circulate indoor air. Outdoor-air ventilation, exhaust and contaminant control are separate functions that must be coordinated with circulation.

What should I send first?

Send building dimensions, clear height, roof or truss plan, rack layout, doors and docks, ceiling services, occupied zones, available power and destination.
